The “UL” mark is the single most recognizable Certification Mark in the United States that signifies a product is safe when properly used as intended. Here are some important things to know about UL labeling, promotion, and advertising.
- Products tested to UL standards and certified by any other organization than Underwriters Laboratory cannot bear the UL mark in any advertising or packaging; the UL mark can only be used once you are directly authorized to use the appropriate certification mark by Underwriters Laboratory
- The UL mark should never appear more prominently in any advertising or packaging than the name of the company manufacturing or selling the approved product
- UL labels and printed symbols must be large enough to be clearly recognized and read by consumers
- On packaging or promotional materials that have been approved to bear the UL mark, you may use red, black, or white on a dark background (one color for all elements of the UL mark)
- Self-declared marketing claims outside the scope of UL’s certification must not be printed or labeled in close proximity to any UL product certification mark
- The UL mark cannot be used on company stationery, business cards, or any other marketing materials that could imply all of your products (or your business itself) has been certified by Underwriters Laboratory
