A label is only one part of the finished package. Its construction must match the container and the environment where the product will be filled, shipped, stocked, and used. A pressure-sensitive label that performs well on a dry glass jar may not be the right choice for a flexible pouch, a rough corrugated carton, or a bottle that will be exposed to condensation.

Start by identifying the package surface. Glass, rigid plastic, aluminum, paperboard, film, and textured containers each present different adhesion and application considerations. Curved containers may require a narrower label, a more flexible facestock, or a different layout to avoid wrinkling and edge lift. Clear containers also require careful planning because adhesive and label opacity can affect how the product appears through the package.

Storage conditions matter just as much. Refrigerated foods, frozen products, sauces, oils, dry goods, and products exposed to moisture each create different demands. The label must adhere at the temperature and surface condition present during application, not just after it reaches the shelf. Use contrast deliberately. Light type on a busy image, metallic background, or transparent film may look premium but become hard to read in store lighting. Choose Materials for Food Packaging Conditions

Film labels offer greater resistance to moisture, oils, and scuffing, making them a practical choice for many refrigerated, frozen, and high-handling applications.

There is no universal best material. The correct choice depends on the package, the label’s intended life, and the conditions it will face. A premium wine label may prioritize texture and visual character. A prepared-food label may need strong adhesion on cold containers and clear thermal-print compatibility for variable information. A snack product in a flexible package may require a material and adhesive that move with the package rather than crack or lift.

Adhesive is equally important. Permanent adhesive is common, but removable, repositionable, freezer-grade, and specialty adhesive options may be needed for specific applications. The container surface should be tested whenever possible, particularly if it has a coating, texture, recycled content, or moisture exposure that could affect adhesion.

Finishes add another layer of decision-making. Gloss can increase color vibrancy and help protect printed graphics. Matte can create a refined look and reduce glare.
